What is Chantix?

Pfizer's Chantix (varenicline) is non-nicotine prescription medicine that is approved to help adults quit smoking. Chantix was approved by the FDA in May 2006, and Pfizer began selling the medication in the United States on August 1, 2006.

Chantix is sold as 0.5 mg and 1 mg tablets. The recommended treatment regime calls for a gradual increase in dose with patients taking 0.5 mg every day for 3 days, 0.5 mg twice daily for 4 days, 1 mg twice daily for the remaining 11 weeks The FDA has approved the use of Chantix for twelve weeks, but the treatment regime can be repeated if smoking ng cessation has been achieved.

How Chantix is Different from Gum, Patches, and Zyban?

Nicotine causes receptors in your brain to release dopamine. Since dopamine affects your happiness and mood, it is not surprising that smoking becomes a pleasurable habit. When a smoker stops smoking, they are no longer receiving that extra dopamine which can make them miserable with serious withdrawal symptoms. For this reason, most smokers who try to quit ultimately fail.

Nicotine replacement products, like the patch, gum and lozenges can help you stop smoking by continuing to release low levels of dopamine in your brain. In this way, these stop smoking medications decrease your craving for nicotine and reduce the signs and symptoms of withdrawal. The prescription drug bupropion sold as Zyban and Wellbutrin works in a similar way.

Chantix also works by stimulating the release of low levels of dopamine in your brain to help reduce the signs and symptoms of withdrawal. In addition, Chantix blocks nicotine receptors in your brain. So if you lapse and have a cigarette, your cigarette doesn't stimulate your brain's receptors the way it did in the past. Cigarettes become much less pleasurable, and your desire to return to regular smoking again may be reduced.
